Protected by a healthy indoor air quality

The CONQUAIR project (ICT Applications to CONquer Optimal Quality of AIR in Long-Term Care Settings) is an ambitious initiative designed to transform air quality management in healthcare environments. Launched in September 2024 and supported by ‘Eureka-Eurostars,’ this innovative two-year collaboration brings together EMBIO Diagnostics (coordinator), the University of Florence, Class Srl (Italy), and Resysten Kft (Hungary). CONQUAIR’s primary goal is to develop cutting-edge Information and Communication Technology (ICT) solutions that ensure optimal air quality in long-term care facilities, addressing a critical health challenge while aligning with the strategic RIS3 agenda.

Indoor air pollution, a major global health concern, contributes to 2.7% of all illnesses worldwide, as highlighted by the World Health Organization. Shockingly, 92% of the global population lives in areas where pollutant levels exceed WHO recommendations. Healthcare facilities are particularly vulnerable, serving as both hotspots and sources of airborne pathogens. These pathogens, spread through suboptimal Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), often result from inadequate ventilation, insufficient hygiene, and the absence of advanced monitoring systems. The consequences are significant: vulnerable patients—such as the immunocompromised, elderly, and children—are at greater risk of contracting serious infections, leading to widespread health-associated infections (HAIs).

Every year, over 3.2 million patients across the European Union contract infections in healthcare settings, with 37,000 lives lost directly to these infections. Beyond the human cost, HAIs place a massive financial burden on healthcare systems, with direct medical expenses ranging from $34 to $74 billion annually, and social costs adding an additional $62 to $73 billion.

The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened awareness of the importance of IAQ and infection control, making projects like CONQUAIR more essential than ever. By introducing advanced air quality monitoring and prevention systems, CONQUAIR is not only protecting healthcare facilities but also extending its impact to hospices, offices, schools, and other communal spaces. This project promises to set new standards in air quality management, helping to safeguard health and enhance well-being across multiple environments.
